Coherence is achieved when every sentence, and every phrase contribute to the meaning of the whole paragraph, and are clearly related to each other, that is to say, when there is paragraph unity. In the excerpt, without the phrase "The next day", the sentence "we took the test and I think I did really well" would seem detached from the other sentence as it would not indicate the sequence of the events, and the passage would lack focus.
