To kill a mockingbird takes place in the fictional town of Maycomb County, Alabama. The book is a story told by Jean Louise Finch (Scout) as she shares her version of her childhood. The book covers many severe topics such as; social standards, sexism, abuse and racial profiling. Topics in which are comprehended by the mind of a child. To Kill a Mockingbird is a coming of age story centered around the Finch family and their fight to do what is right and defend an innocent black man, as well as discover the true intentions of a madman who locked himself in his house for years. Scout learns the lessons of love, mercy and tolerance. And to never shoot a mockingbird, for it is a sin to kill a thing that sings beautifully and harms nobody.
I would say that the theme that Leo Tolstoy explores in this excerpt from The Death of Ivan Ilyich is that C) human mortality is inevitable, and it is important to live an authentic life.
