Albert Einstein was very eccentric, He loved “thought experiments” that made physical objects shrink as viewed from different (very high velocity) frames of reference approaching light-speed, his lifelong fascination. He also thought that time was some thing that expands at high speeds… and said that “time is what clocks measure.”

So that settles what time is. If clocks slow down, time slows down.

Pretty eccentric, all of that. And it still stands today as the “physics” of “special relativity.
