Water can stop the process of a metamorphic rock from forming.

In order for a metamorphic rock to form it needs to be exposed by the chemicals from it's surroundings so if water washes the chemicals away from its surroundings or wash the chemicals off the rock it can stop the process from happening which stops the rock from forming into a metamorphic rock.

The more air is in the jar, the longer the candle will be able to burn. So the candle in jar 3 probably burned for 4 minutes.
The candle in jar 4 would be able to burn much longer then the others, because it has no lid so air can come through and keep the candle burning.
