Variations in the progeny produced by asexual reproduction come from mutations and errors during DNA replication. Mutations are the sudden random changes in the genome that add variations. Replication is the process of DNA synthesis; any error during DNA replication leads to genetic variations in the progeny.  

Since asexual reproduction does not include fusion of gametes, fertilization can not add variations to the progeny produced by asexual reproduction.
