Mike is a 58-year-old mechanic who has worked in the same garage for most of his adult life. Although his is still quite strong

for his age and doesn’t have too many aches or pains yet, he has gained 30 pounds during the last few years, since his divorce. His ex-wife was a good cook who made dinner at home, but now that’s he’s single, Mike eats at the corner diner most nights and mainly snacks on potato chips. At 5 feet, 11 inches, Mike now weighs 250 pounds and has gone from a 34-inch to a 38-inch waist in less than two years. Mike has an appointment with his family doctor for the first time in four years and is worried about what he might be told, so he decided to find out what he can in advance. 1. Answer:

A,D, E,K- these are the fat soluble vitamins.

Explanation:

They are are hydrophobic in nature, thus can not be absorbed directly into the blood stream. They are absorbed only with fat and lipids, in the GI tract ( in the lacteal,) and conveyed through the lymphatic system to empty directly into the blood. This explains the reason why they are called fat soluble vitamins

They are transported in the blood by binding to specific protein or as lipo protein, and stored in the adipose tissues and liver as fat globules.

,

Their functions varies from maintaining good vision by Vit A; to Ca+ and P03- absorption and homeostasis by Vit D. to mediation in blood clotting factors iby Vit K and to neutralization of radicals as antioxidant by Vit E.

Thus any disease associated with difficulty fat absorption will lead to deficiency of the fat-soluble vitamins.
