John Smith was captured and imprisoned by the Powhatan in late 1607, it is said that they threatened Smith to killing him. Anyway, after a month, Smith was free and back in Jamestown. Before he went back, he concluded a deal with the Powhatan were they had to provide the colonists with foor.

Smith, as a proud colonist, had many different reasons to write a first hand account, between them there is the fact that he wanted to promote his own heroism, also, spending time with the natives would provide him an unprecedented glimpse of American Indian Life, besides that he gained language skills and insights that he used as an advantage while dealing with the Indians he encountered.

The US President Franklin D Roosevelt delivered The Infamy Speech to a Joint Session of the U.S. Congress on 8 December 1941. It was on that day  Japan attacked the US naval base at Pearl Harbor. The focus of the speech is the determined realism and Roosevelt, in the face to damage, felt his confidence in the will and strength of the people of America which is far greater than those among the people of other countries.
