Read the excerpt from "The Adventure of the Mysterious Picture." The expression was that of agony—the agony of intense bodily pa

in; but a menace scowled upon the brow, and a few sprinklings of blood added to its ghastliness. Yet it was not all these characteristics—it was some horror of the mind, some inscrutable antipathy awakened by this picture, which harrowed up my feelings. Answer:

Imagery

Explanation:

One of the techniques that Irving is using in this text is that of imagery. Imagery refers to a type of language that is used by poets or other authors. It includes figurative language that uses creative ways to describe a thing, place or situation. It also employs devices such as metaphors and similes. In this case, Irving is using imagery when describing the expression the person had, the pain he felt and the horror he inspired.

Anna71 [15]

Answer:

The answer is "to provide."

Explanation:

The sentence "The purpose of this workshop is _____ new employees with all the necessary information" requires an infinitive to be completed. An infinitive is the basic form of a verb, without an inflection binding it to a particular subject or tense. "To provide" is an infinitive, and thus completes the sentence properly.

adelina 88 [10]

Answer:

The authors tone in "About Russel" changes from hopeful, to unpromising. In Passage A the author is seen stating, "...Russel's future was bright and without limitation..." This gives a feeling of optimism, and shows that Russel was headed on a good path. This feeling changes in Passage B, as it says, "Further and further Russel slipped away, unable to make eye contact or hold a conversation." This sentence is very discouraging, as it seems all progress made was simply forgotten. Putting these two sentences together, it shows the change in tone dramatically, further proving the point of this change in tone. In conclusion, the tone of each passage is different, as it goes from expectant to hopeless.
