Answer:

He was known to be very proud of his birth and station

Explanation:

A shot story titled “The Nose” was narrated by Nikolai Gogol when he lived in St. Petersburg. The story was divided into three major parts and further talked about a certain academic Assessor known as Kovaloff, who woke up one morning from sleep, only to realize his nose has left him to live a life of its nose.

Kovaloff, who was a member of the city council, preferred to call himself Major Kovaloff even though he was not one. Since he lived abroad and worked there, he felt he was an important man in the society and deserved to be called Major.

He was known to be very proud of his birth and station and he wanted to have everyone respect him for that.

One such situation in which compulsion might be implicit is if someone is in need or rescuing, since although they could be "forced" to be rescued, it can be assumed that they would want to be rescued anyway.

Long after the world to which it belonged has vanished, a habit of thought will live on, indelibly imprinted upon a race or nation, like the footprint of some extinct beast or bird upon a piece of stone.

The word indelibly refers to the anything that is impossible to remove or forget. It is the mark that cannot be erased.
