Because countries realized if they  were economically tied to other countries if a war broke out their economy would be ruined.

In democracy, all people can vote for a leader. However, feudalism is where people have more power based off their social rank (like a Count). 
Essentially, your vote counts - no matter who you are - in democracy. In feudalism, only the important people vote - like a Count.
