I have not read the passage myself, but here are some helpful tips that can help you to figure it out. An ellipses is a series of three periods (...). Imagery is description that involves the senses, typically sight. Whatever the story makes you visualize is its imagery. Metaphors are figures of speech that contain comparisons, but do not use "like" or "as." Examples of metaphors include "the blanket of snow" or "the curtain of night." by providing biographical information about specific astronomers and their discoveries

Explanation:

Ball has written a book about the great astronomers and reveals that astronomy would not be what we know today without the lives of these men who have contributed so much to the development of this science. The answer is The Pony Express was invaluable during the national crisis.
Pony Express started in the 1800s when three men had put up a mail delivery system that would reach from Midwest to California. The design of the system connected a number of over one hundred stations, each almost two hundred forty miles long, across the country.
