Before being amended, the constitution stated that if the presidency became vacant, the powers and duties of the president were to be transferred to the Vice-President.

It's the same procedure to be implemented nowadays. Should the president die or be impeached or by whatever other reason the presidency be vacant, the Vice-President ought to take the office.
