They were small creatures that looked like elves, were three feet tall, had red eyes and sharp nails, and attacked anyone who invaded their territory and lost people.

The red caps were inspired by mythology, which says that these dwarf attack travelers who invade their territories, murdering them and staining their hat with blood.
