The first settlers in North America were from Europe. During the 10th and 11th centuries the Vikings from Scandinavian villages in Sweden, Norway and Denmark sailed west crossing the North sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The first settlement in North America was in the coast of present day Newfoundland in northeastern Canada, by the year A.D. 1001.
