As the exercise suggests, let's call the two consecutive integers x and [/tex] x+2 [/tex]. In fact, if x is even, the next number, x+1 is odd, and the next number (x+1)+1=x+2 is again even.

Moreover, since the two numbers are positive, the square of the bigger one is actually bigger, so the difference is (x+2)^2-x^2

In fact, note that if the numbers were negative, for example -6 and -4, their squares would be 36 and 16, so you should have subtracted

(-6)^2-(-4)^2 = 36-16 = 20

So, the difference of their squares is

(x+2)^2 - x^2 = (x^2+4x+4)-x^2 = 4x+4

And we know that this difference is 68, so the equation is

4x+4=68 \iff 4x = 64 \iff x = \dfrac{64}{4} = 16

So, the two consecutive even integers are 16 and 18.

Let's check the answer!

The difference of their squares is

18^2-16^2 = 324-256=68

If a^b= b^a and b = 2a, what is the value of a + b?
katen-ka-za [31]

<u>We are given:</u>

aᵇ = bᵃ

b = 2a

<u>Finding (a+b):</u>

<u>Finding a:</u>

replacing b by 2a in the first equation, we get:

(a²)ᵃ = (2a)ᵃ

(a²)ᵃ = 2ᵃ * aᵃ

a²ᵃ / aᵃ = 2ᵃ                  [dividing both sides by aᵃ]

aᵃ = 2ᵃ                          [because xᵃ / xᵇ = xᵃ⁻ᵇ]

a = 2                             [raising both sides to 1/a]

<u>Finding b:</u>

We are given that b = 2a

now that we know what a equals, we will plug that value here

b = 2(2)

b = 4

<u>Finding a+b:</u>

We found that a = 2, b = 4

a + b = 2 + 4 = 6

How would you write the following expression as a single term? 3[2 ln(x-1) - lnx] + ln (x+1)
Elan Coil [88]

Apply the rule: n ln x = ln x^{n}

3[2 ln(x-1) - lnx] + ln(x+1)=3[ln(x-1)^{2} - lnx ] + ln(x+1)

Apply the rule : log a - log b = log \frac{a}{b}

3[2 ln(x-1) - lnx] + ln(x+1)=3ln\frac{(x-1)^{2} }{x} + ln(x+1)

Apply the rule: n ln x = ln x^{n}

3[ln (x-1)^{2} -ln x]+ln (x+1)= ln \frac{(x-1)^{6} }{x^{3} } +log(x+1)

Finally, apply the rule: log a + log b = log ab

3[ln(x-1)^{2} -ln x]+log(x+1)=ln\frac{(x-1)^{6}(x+1) }{x^{3} }
