The GI Bill of Rights allowed US veterans from World War II to receive economic and educational benefits based on their military service.

The GI Bill helped veterans after World War II by providing them with low interest home loans. This allowed for the growth of suburbs during the 1950's. Along with this, the GI Bill helped to pay veterans education. Millions of men have used this law to pay for their college education.

Even though African Americans served in the war during World War II, many of them did not receive the same benefits as white citizens. For example, many African American citizens had a much more difficult time receiving low interest home loans in comparison to their white peers.

In this battle, General Robert E. Lee suffered losses so heavy ( with total casualties estimated to be in the region of 23,000 - 28,000) that he could no longer mount an effective defense. He later asked to be replaced by the Confederates president Jefferson Davis.
