What this quote is basically trying to portray is that the most important thing in life is having someone you can trust, love, understand etc. and they can do the same for you. A true friend is someone who brings out the best in you, who encourages your achievements, who stays with you through your dark times and is never afraid to tell you the truth. In some cases having such a friend can save someone's life by reminding them that they are loved. There's many kinds of friendships like those between relatives, with pets and other people. Each one is special in their own way. Basically, having a true friend in life is something that makes it worth living.
