You could use yarn to connect the arms. It may not be "floating" but it would probably look cute.
I find that when I sit down to creat, I'm mostly inspired by my emotions. My emotions depict what colors I use most, my stroke styles, my pencil pressure. My mood also affects what I choose to create, and what utensils I choose to use.
