In order to get b our from under that square root sign, we have to square it. But if we square that side we also have to square the other side because this is an equation, after all, and we need to keep it in balance. If we square the right, we undo the square root, and the equation then looks like this: (a+1)^2=b+1. We will FOIL out the left side to get a^2+2a+1=b+1. Now, to solve for b, we will subtract the 1 from both sides, leaving us with b=a^2+2a, the first of your choices above.

What is the equation of the following line written in general form?
Arturiano [62]

The line drops 4 units between the points (1, 6) and (6, 2) as it goes over 5 units. Thus the point-slope form of the equation can be written as

... y - k = m(x - h) . . . . . . line with slope m through point (h, k)

... y - 6 = (-4/5)(x - 1)

Multiplying by 5 and subtracting the right side gives ...

... 5y - 30 = -4x +4

... 4x + 5y - 34 = 0 . . . . . equation in general form

The width of a rectangle is 5 units less than the length. The area of the rectangle is 6 units. What is the width, in units, of
Readme [11.4K]

Answer:

The width of rectangle is 1 unit.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

The area of rectangle is 6 units and its width is 5 units less than the length.

So, to find the width of rectangle.

Let the length be x and the width be x-5.

Now, to find the width we put the formula of area of rectangle:

Area = length × width

6= x\times (x-5)

6=x^{2}-5x

0=x^{2}-5x-6

0=x^{2}-6x+x-6

0=x(x-6)+1(x-6)

0=(x-6)(x+1)

On solving equation we get:

x-6=0, x+1=0

Therefore, we take the value x=6 as it is positive value:

x-6=0

x=6

So, the width of rectangle:

Width = x-5

          = 6-5

          = 1

Therefore, the width of rectangle is 1 unit.
