Before 1917 it was ruled by the Romanov Dynasty, but after October Revolution the Communist Bolsheviks took over resulting in a civil war between the Whites(anti-Communists) and the Reds(Communists). In 1922 a union of multiple national Soviet republics was formed known as Soviet Union or the USSR.

Soviet Union was unable to match the economic prowess of the United States and succumbed to the economic pressure generated by decade long military build up against the US. The USSR disintegrated in 1991 resulting in the independence of multiple states. These included the Central Asian States and the states in Eastern Europe.
