Being a self declared President of the Republic of Vietnam he displayed  favoritism towards Catholics and persecuted the South Vietnam's Buddhist majority which led to the "Buddhist crisis" of 1963. So much was the hatred for him by the farmers of South Vietnam that there was an attempt to assassinate him at an agricultural fair in Buôn Ma Thuột.
