The answer is steel which is very hard and strong. It is a lot as a structural and fabricating material.
I think the main factor was the lack of safety workers had during the Industrial Revolution, especially women, children, and minorities. Some of the results were an increased concern and awareness of factory conditions, labor reforms, and a larger role for the government to monitor companies' treatment of workers.
