What does Emerson say about great people
jok3333 [9.3K]
Emerson said that "To be great is to be misunderstood." He also said that a great person constantly changes. He cited examples of great men like Pythagoras, Socrates, Jesus Christ, Luther, Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton. A great individual must also not violate one's nature even though that person may not be understood by the society.
Hope it helped!

How do Kevin’s interactions with his father and his teacher, Waldo, help develop the theme within the story? Provide evidence fr
docker41 [41]

One theme of this story is coming of age, which is revealed through Kevin’s experiences at school and home. In the story, Kevin feels caught between his interactions with his father at home and his teacher at school. Waldo, Kevin’s teacher, humiliates Kevin because his father helped him complete his homework, which is incorrect. Consider the character interaction at the end of the story between Kevin and his father:

“How did it go today?” his father asked.

“All right.” They kept silent until they reached the corner of their own street.

“What about the Latin?”

Kevin faltered, feeling a babyish desire to cry.

“How was it?”

“OK. Fine.”

“Good. I was a bit worried about it. It was done in a bit of a rush. Son, your Da’s a genius.” He smacked him with the paper again. Kevin laughed and slipped his hand into the warmth of his father’s overcoat pocket, deep to the elbow.

Kevin has the “babyish desire to cry,” but he doesn’t let his father know about the problems at school. His restraint shows that through this experience Kevin has matured, and he is protecting his father from feeling the humiliation from his school experience.

LITERARY ANALYSIS: Heart of Darkness is narrated from the perspective of a European exploring Africa. The passage conveys his pe
GuDViN [60]

The author characterizes the narrator as a man who was strongly shaken by everything he witnessed in Africa.

This can be seen because:

  • The book's narrator, Marlow, is very excited to participate in the journey to colonize Africa.
  • This excitement is created by a strong influence of the setting where he finds himself.
  • This scenario is a prosperous Europe, due to strong colonization.
  • However, the narrator's excitement ends when he arrives in Africa.
  • The setting in Africa is very different from the setting in Europe.
  • In Africa, the narrator interacts with a scenario of poverty, exploitation, violence, devaluation, and decadence, all created by European colonizers.
  • The narrator is very shaken by this scenario and shows himself to be a physically and mentally ill man. He becomes weak, distraught, and unable to act normally.

This change in narrator characterization is very significant for "Heart of Darkness." This is because the author wanted to present an anti-colonial story, as he wanted to show that all people involved in colonialism and imperialism were negatively affected.
