Assuming none of the factors is zero, if an odd number of the factors of a multiplication problem have negative signs, then the product will be negative. Otherwise, the product is positive.

Assuming the dividend of a division problem is non-zero, the quotient wil be negative if the signs of the dividend and divisor are differnt. Otherwise the quotient is positive.

In short, if a multiplication or division problem involves an odd number of minus signs, the result will be negative. Otherwise, the result is positive.

Actually Welcome to the Concept of the Similarities.

Since here, first figure is a Triangle, hence similarity of a triangle is given by ratio of it sides and make them equate,

hence for,

1.) 16/12 = x/9 ===> 4/3 = x/9 ===> x = 9*4/3 ==> x = 36/3

hence the value of x is 12 , ===> x = 12 .

2.) here,in the case of a Reactangle the relation is such that, length = 2* breadth,

hence we apply the relation,

x = 2*4.5 ===> x = 9 units.

f(x) \approx f(x_o)+f'(x_o)(x-x_o)

For a cube the surface area is 6x^2.

So the side is 1.0 inch in, the surface area is =6\times1^2 = 6 square inches.  

In Linear approximation means you ignore the term x_o^2 , if x_o is a small number, because then x_o^2 will be a very smalle number and that does not contribute much to the error.  

So the surface area is approximately,

6x^2=6x_o^2+12x_o(x-x_o)

So here, x=1.001, x_o=0.001

The error in the area is approximately,

12 \times 0.001=0.012

So the error is 0.012.
