Why is it important that the Van Daan and Frank family names do not appear on the ration books? The families do not believe in the ration books system, because it is unfair. The families are getting extra rations, and they do not want anyone to know. The families are in hiding, so no one can know they are receiving rations. The families do not understand the ration system, so they do not want to be a part of it.

The Franks, the Van Daans and Dussel, hide for almost twenty-five months in an annex of Mr. Frank's office. It is Miep Gies and Mr. Kraler who are in charge of bringing them food and other needed things.
