Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) is considered the "Father of the Symphony." He composed over 100 of them, as well as 83 string quartets and dozens of creations in various instrumental and vocal, sacred and profane genres. He died at 77 and spent at least half a century working for music. The second movement of his 1797 “Emperor” Quartet was later adopted as Germany's National Anthem.
