The altitude of Polaris measured by an observer at the Tropic of Cancer is 1) 15° 2) 23.5° 3) 66.5° 4) 90°
9966 [12]

Answer: 23.5\°

Explanation:

The Tropic of Cancer is one of the parallels (imaginary line around the Earth parallel to the equator) located in the northern hemisphere (currently its latitude is 23.43672\° \approx 23.5\°).

It is called "Cancer" because a long time ago, when the summer solstice occurred in the northern hemisphere (on June 20th or 21st), the Sun was in the constellation Cancer (the crab).

Now, if we were just in the North Pole, Polaris would by exactly over our heads (90\° over the horizon), but as we go south and find the Tropic of Cancer parallel, Polaris altitude will be approximately at an angle of 23.5\° over the horizon.

Hence, the altitude of Polaris measured by an observer at the Tropic of Cancer is 23.5\°.

Which monsoon would a trader rely on to sail from Africa to India ?
jolli1 [7]
<span>Sometime before 100 B.C., Greek sailors coming from Egypt discovered a shortcut to India.  Much easier and more direct than the arduous overland route, or than hugging the deserted coastlines of Arabia and Persia for 5,000 miles, this route took only weeks to travel.  Sailing straight out into the open waters of the Arabian Sea during the late spring, ships were whisked by the monsoon winds on a steady northeast course, arriving on India’s west coast by mid-summer. It was a daring feat for those first sailors who attempted it.  In a time when ships rarely ventured out of sight of land, and open waters invited the prospect of drifting aimlessly at sea, it took an extraordinarily bold, unlucky, or stupid navigator to sail out into one of the largest bodies of water on the planet.  Fortunately for those first crews who made the attempt, they were saved by one of the great forces of nature: the monsoon.

Explain why do we redraw voting boundaries every 10 years
Andrews [41]

Redistricting is the process by which new congressional and state legislative district boundaries are drawn. All United States Representatives and state legislators are elected from political divisions called districts. District lines are redrawn every 10 years following completion of the United States census. The federal government stipulates that districts must have nearly equal populations and must not discriminate on the basis of race or ethnicity.[1]

See the sections below for further information on the following topics:

Background: This section summarizes federal requirements for redistricting at both the congressional and state legislative levels. In addition, recent court decisions affecting redistricting policy are summarized.

Methods: This section provides details about the various redistricting processes used in the states.

Competitiveness: This section summarizes some of the arguments about the impact of redistricting on electoral competitiveness. Margin-of-victory and competitiveness data for congressional and state legislative elections is provided for informational purposes.

Majority-minority districts: This section summarizes the legal basis for the creation of majority-minority districts and details some of the arguments surrounding the practice.
