The irony of the fact that Daniel's first position in the new job is the dishwashing station lies in the fact that we have previously learned this is the job that he hates the most when he has to do it at home. The outcome is ironic because it is contrary to the outcome that most people would expect. However, the irony is highlighted by the fact that it is also this job which teaches him a lesson on humility and perseverance.
