It is not the fastest way between two points, and there may be interference or a middleman. An indirect source is one in which the information is not directly from the author of the source, but rather the source using a different source for the information.

using the original text of "Hamlet" is a direct source. Whereas, when the quotations of "Hamlet" used in a book are again re-cited in another book. This is an indirect sourcing, basically meaning getting one's source from someone else's already done work. The very word "indirect" signifies there is no direct connectivity between the source and the reproduced work. The words gotten through the secondary or indirect sourcing may not be as reliable as that of direct sourcing and may even include the opinions added by the writer of that secondary source.
