<u>Explaining the feelings for her, the narrator says that whenever she looked at him he felt like "diving in the river again from agony and joy."</u>

<u>With this expression he tries to paint the emotions of being in love - it is agony because you are fighting for the love of the other person, you wish to do everything right and are always nervous, but also it is joyous if the person does notice you and looks like you, and you feel the happiness and triumph. </u>In the scene narrated in the story, the author paints these feelings of agony and joy perfectly, showing how the narrator is nervous and scared, but also happy to be going out with the girl that he likes.
