Unions made working conditions better for workers. Workers would use unions to fight against working in dangerous conditions, having to work unpaid overtime, having too low wages because of high competition, and similar things. Commonly, union activity was not good for employers since they always want to make a profit, often even at the expense of the workers, so all new acts introduced because of the union were usually disliked by employers.

Nativists are people who are against immigration, and in employment, this usually refers to the idea that immigrants take jobs from citizens of a country because they are prepared to work for lower wages. Sometimes this is true, sometimes it is not. Nowadays, it's mostly untrue but historically it was a big problem for many workers since immigrants would suffer discrimination while nativists would lose jobs.

Sacco and Vanzetti were two people who were put on trial for murder after they killed a guard while they were robbing a bank. They were found guilty and were given capital punishment. This was problematic because it is believed that they didn't deserve capital punishment for such a crime and that it was politically charged since they were affiliated with the anarchist movement.

The red scare was a period in United States history when everyone was afraid of rising communist and socialist tendencies. It began right after the soviet revolution since many people in America believed that similar things might happen to them, so they made a huge witch hunt of sort where anyone who was deemed socialist or communist or anarchist was charged and put on trial and similar things.
