Plumouth was the second English colony established in America. It was established in the state of Massachusetts, far from the first English colony, Jamestown, located in Virginia. Although both colonies were dominated and controlled by the British crown, Plymouth was far from Jamestown and did not comply with the laws established there, nor did it share the same religious and economic concepts. This was a concern for the British government, as it caused a failure in its control and administration within the American continent.

When the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in 1848, the US contained fifteen free and fifteen slave states.
