Since there were not enough voluntary members for the US military during the Vietnam War, the US government instituted a draft. This draft focused on men aged 18-25 to serve for the US. This draft had many effects, including increased political participation by colleged aged citizens as they were now fighting for the right to vote. Along with this, thousands of men refused to listen to the government. This created a population of "draft dodgers" who avoided serving in the war because they did not agree with American involvement in Vietnam.
