y = 5x - 40...so we sub in 5x - 40 in for y in the other equation

y - 3x = -24
5x - 40 - 3x = -24
5x - 3x = -24 + 40
2x = 16
x = 16/2
x = 8

y = 5x - 40
y = 5(8) - 40
y = 40 - 40
y = 0

solution is (8,0)
