After a revolution and liberation from their shackles, the Mexica overthrew the Toltecs and establish themselves as the new predominant power in the central region, rising their new capital city, Tenochtitlan.
In order to preserve their dominance, the Mexica conducted what came to be known as "Flower Wars", which consisted of bloody military campaigns against other mesoamerican tribes.
These incursions would provide the Mexica with pillaged goods and slaves. The fate of the slaves was either to be sacrificed at top of the Great Temple, and have their heart offered to the sun god, Huitzilopochtli - which would keep the sun ablaze according to their beliefs -, or be sentenced to work in mines until death. In some cases, if the victims were too old and emaciated, they would be set free.
