In general, the tropical climate zones closer tot he Equator tend to be the wettest, with huge amounts of rainfall, and having lush vegetation. The third zone, north and south of the savanna is the steppe. It is semi-arid, with small amounts of precipitation only in one particular part of the year. It is dominated by short grasses. The zone on the outskirts of the tropical zone is the desert. It is arid zone, with the precipitation being below 250 mm annually, and often lacking for years at a time. The landscape is dominated by send or barren rock.
