The beginning of settlements in New Netherland began in the 17th century when a group of traders came to the land by ship sponsored by the West India Company. The passengers of this ship became the first occupants of the settlement in New Netherland which is now known as present-day Manhattan.

With the interest in the fur trade and the promise of religious freedom to the settlers, Dutch traders brought settlers into the land with increased interest in trading rather than permanent settlement. Trading companies then lure people with the prospect of having a stable trading system and also the freedom to practice their own religions. This prospect of having religious freedom and also make money led to the gradual increase in the number of settlers coming into the land.
