Genenral Valeriano Weyler was in charge of Cuba before the Spanish- American War.
General Martínez Campos was replaced with General Valeriano Weyler in 1896 after rebel forces had taken control of most of Cuba. Nicknamed ,El Carnicero (“The Butcher”) he set forward a “reconcentration” plan which consisted in forcing Cubans into camps where they were subjected to starvation and disease and where tens of thousands died. The aim of this plan was to empty the revolutionaries of the support on which they depended.
