The scenario could have been prevented following some simple rules, first Krystal should have not sneakily approached her classmate Carin knowing that in the laboratory students use substances that can be potentially dangerous, secondly, while working in the lab students must use closed shoes to prevent having contact with substances or broken glass if an accident happens.

To minimize the harm students must identify the substance spilled and notify the authorities, based on the nature of the substance you'll decide what will be the next step, you'll most likely need to use the showers in the lab and then go to the nursery.
