Orpheus decides to rescue his wife from the Underworld because of love and desire. Eurydice dies on their wedding day after being bitten by a snake. Orpheus uses his music to show his longing for his wife. Eventually he decides that he should actually do something about it and goes to beg Hades to release her from the Underworld.

In the story the temptations and desires of man are highlighted. Orpheus is not only so desirous of his wife that he travels into the Underworld to get her, but he also can't keep his eyes off of her long enough to save her.
Orpheus was allowed to travel into the Underworld and save Eurydice as long as she walked behind him on the way out and he didn't look back. Orpheus couldn't resist the temptation, looked back, and Eurydice was lost to him forever.
Hero's Journey
This story takes the typical plot structure of the hero's journey. Orpheus is the hero. He goes on a quest to bring his wife back from the Underworld. He must succeed at various tasks along the way.
