It is secreted by the epidermal cells and protects the leaf from excessive water loss from exposure to the sun. Therefore, plants in a dry environment like a desert will develop a thick cuticle to reduce loss of water to the minimum, as an adaptation, because it is rare for the plant to find water and hence needs as much as possible to retain the little water it gathers.
