Where does the opening chapter take place in The Scarlet Letter?.
gtnhenbr [62]

The Scarlet Letter takes place in a Puritan town during the 17th century.

Summary of this novel:

The Scarlet Letter begins with a lengthy introduction to how the book was written. The unnamed narrator was a customs surveyor in Salem, Massachusetts. In the customs attic, he found many documents, including a manuscript bundled with scarlet gold embroidered cloth in the shape of an "A".

The work of an early surveyor, this manuscript details events that occurred some 200 years before the time of the narrator. When the narrator loses his customs post, he decides to write a fictional account of the events recorded in the manuscript. The Scarlet Letter is the final product.

The story begins in 17th-century Boston, then a Puritan settlement. A young woman, Hester Prynne, was brought out of the city prison with her little daughter Pearl in her arms and a scarlet "A" on her chest. A man in the crowd tells her elderly bystander that Hester is being punished for adultery. Her husband, Hester, a scholar much older than her, sent her ahead to America, but she never made it to Boston.

The Scarlet Letter takes place in a Puritan town during the 17th century.
