The title "Two Kinds" refers to the statement by the mother that there are only two kinds of daughters: "Those who are obedient

and those who follow their own mind!" At the end of "Two Kinds," Jing-mei puts the title in a different light when she realizes that the titles "Pleading Child" and "Perfectly Contented" are "two halves of the same song." In an essay, describe the connection between these two titles and the "two kinds" of daughters. Refer to events and details in the story to support your response. As this is a personal task, we cannot provide an essay for you. However, we can provide an initial analysis of the story that can help as guidance for your work.

In the story "Two Kinds," we witness the conflict that exists between Jing-mei and her mother. Jing-mei was born in the United States, but her mother came from China, and this creates a difficult cultural conflict between the two. While Jing-mei has dreams that could be characterized as more "American" (such as being a Chinese Shirley Temple), her mother wants her to follow her instructions and be more traditionally successful.

One meaning of the "two kinds" idea is that of the conflict between the kind of daughter Jing-mei is meant to be and the daughter that she actually is. However, another meaning becomes obvious towards the end of the story. As she finds the two halves of the song ("Pleading Child" and "Perfectly Contented"), Jing-mei realizes that she is also two different kinds of person, who are not necessarily in conflict, but can reconcile. The two parts of her are as much united and complementary as the two parts of the song.

In at least one hundred words, describe how the title of Daly's short story helps give a context for the story.
andreev551 [17]

Answer:

<em>"Sixteen"</em> by Maureen Daly is a short story that explores the theme of teenage life. Teenage period is a period which brings confusion, which is evident in the main character, a sixteen-year-old girl. She is an average teenage girl that follows the latest styles, reads the editorials and listens to the radio. However, she faces certain struggles and is not sure whether to follow her heart or reason. This is certainly an issue that many teenagers go through, as at this point in life, it is very hard to make decisions. Therefore, from the very title of the story, we can guess what it is about. The title indicates that a character from the story (probably the protagonist) is sixteen years old. In this way, the narrator gives us a clue that the story is centered around different struggles that he/she faces at this age.
