What are statuses and roles?

Statuses and roles are two distinct things that are inherent to every society. Statuses are the different position in which people may found themselves, as for example being a parent is a status. A role is a series of behaviour that is associated with that status (parents should love their children no matter what) that could be either formal or informal.
---
Where do these statuses/roles come from?

Statuses and roles come from society. We tend to assign statuses to people in order to understand what they should do, and this helps us all understand the society in which we leave in a better way because we know what to expect. Is someone tells that he/she is a parent, most of the people would immediately know a series of behaviour that could be associated with that status and so would be able to understand the person in a better way.
----
What are the good and bad to them?

Statuses and roles are good because they give us immediate understanding over a sometimes very complex society, and moreover it helps define what we expect of ourselves when we are invested of a certain status. At the same time, statuses and roles are bad because they confine us to that specific status and role, where in reality we are creature much more complex than our statuses and roles. Moreover, sometimes those could bring conflicts and discrimination.
---
How do statuses and roles affect the lives of individual members of society?

Statuses and roles affect the lives of individual members of society in various way. For instance, the perception of the expectations related to a role could put pressure on an individual, like female people who feel pressure to have a child after a certain age, because our role in society has the expectation of producing a baby.

What's the xyz affair
andrew11 [14]
XYZ affair was a political affair in 1797 and 1798 involving United States and France.

It was a situation in which war could have been declared. It started with financial problems of the French government and their decision to seize American merchant ships. A diplomatic mission was working towards a de-escalation of the conflict, but the French side demanded bribes, which the US didn't want to grant.

The conflict finally was settled in a diplomatic way and a war was avoided.

saveliy_v [14]

A benefit of cohabitation is that the partners won't have to deal with pressure to marry.

What is Cohabitation?

 • By defining each partner's rights and obligations, a cohabitation agreement can make the process of divorcing considerably easier.
 • By doing this, the likelihood of disagreements over money and other specifics can be decreased, and any conflicts can be resolved amicably without resorting to legal action.
 • Living together before getting married has the advantage of allowing one to get to know each other better, enhancing the ability to solve problems together, strengthening the bond, and enhancing the relationship's resilience to stress, all of which can give some more confidence in the decision to get married.
 • Their inertia argument states that cohabitation, as opposed to dating without cohabitation, improves the likelihood of marriage, in part because there are more incentives to stay together once a couple starts living together.

Alex17521 [72]

From the example given, it can be said that a type of social influence called informational social influence is happening to the French people.

Informational social influence is a type of social influence where the individual conforms to a certain set of behaviors and norms because he or she believes that someone else is more knowledgeable about that situation.

In the case of Halloween, since it is an American holiday, the French are imitating traditions that the Americans do during the celebration since the French are unfamiliar with the customs that people do during Halloween.
