Indentured servants were poor European immigrants who did not have money to pay for the transatlantic trip to the U.S. Most of them came from England, Scotland, Ireland, and Germany, and the period of indentured servitude was 4 years on average.
After the period ended, they became freemen and could work in anything the wanted. Most became owners of small farms, and others became artisans or worked in the ports.
