Thyroid gland is an endocrine gland. It is present just inferior to the  larynx. It is a butterfly-shaped gland. The thyroid gland has two lateral lobes. These are called right and left lobes. Two lobes of the thyroid gland are present on either side of the trachea. The lobes are connected by a narrow passage called the isthmus. Isthmus is present anterior to the trachea. The function of thyroid hormones is to regulate the basal metabolic rate, growth and development of body.
