During respiration, the energy locked up in foods is released in a multiple-steps reaction whose summary goes thus;

                    C_6H_1_2O_6 + 6O_2 -------> 6CO_2 + 6H_2O + energy

<em>Hence, if germinating seeds are placed in an airtight container, the much needed oxygen for respiration will be limited, resulting in the slowing down of cellular respiration due to inadequate oxygen. If the condition persists much longer, cellular respiration will cease completely and the seeds will die off.</em>
