What makes Antigone a rebel is her decision to go bury her brother, with or without Ismene.
In "The Royal House of Thebes", Creon, the ruler of Thebes, forbids all citizens to bury Ismene and Antigone's brother Polynices, who is blamed for causing the war. Moreover, Creon warns everyone that he will punish the person that dares to bury him to death. Despite Creon's warnings, Antigone demonstrates that she is a rebel by going against the law of the citizens and deciding to bury her brother with or without Ismene, who is determined to obey Creon and the human law.
