A dowry was a way to put a price on a woman, her intelligence, prestige, beauty, and hierarchy when a man wanted to marry her, but instead of using money as payment it was something more along the lines of farm animals.  So basically it was like a trade system almost. Once the man paid however much the father and soon to be husband agreed upon the woman was his to marry.
