Nations who want to become a part of the European Union must qualify the Copenhagen Criteria. According to these Criteria, a state has systems institutions to maintain democratic governance,  a functioning market economy, and human rights, and affirms the responsibilities and intention of the European Union. In short, it is important for a nation to maintain democracy and have a functional economy to become a member of the European Union.

The Black Death

Explanation:

The Black Death bascially destroyed Europe, being a fatal disease.  The reason why it was so deadly though was because of how fast it spread.  Animals like rats first got the disease, then it spread to humans.  The diease spread so quickly was because  back then the towns were dirty and crowded, which rats often lived in, which caused rats to make common contact with humans.
